How to Transition Your Skincare for Autumn

Good-bye summer, hello autumn! Just as we change our wardrobe when the mercury starts to drop, we also need to alter our skincare routine. Colder, drier weather requires a different regimen than the hot humidity of summertime. Here are five tips to transition your skincare for the fall. Follow our advice to keep your skin healthy and vibrant!

Turn Down the Shower Temperature

When the chilly days set in, the temptation to crank up the heat and take a super-steamy shower is definitely strong. While we can’t always resist our urges, keep in mind that the warm water will rob your skin of essential oils, leaving you feeling drier. Taking too many hot and humid showers will strip your natural oils faster than your skin can produce them, potentially leading to irritated skin. If you just can’t fight the impulse to turn up the temperature, it’s okay, we won’t tell. Instead, try using VITAL C Hydrating Facial Oil after your shower by applying one dropper all over your face and neck. This blend of skin-conditioning plant oils, fatty acids and antioxidants help your skin retain moisture for a supple appearance.

Keep Up the SPF

Don’t let cloudy days fool you! UV rays will still penetrate your skin and cause damage. It’s very important to keep up your SPF routine as we transition into fall. While chances are you’ll be wearing more sweaters and trading in your shorts for long pants, you still need to protect that beautiful face. Try PREVENTION+ Daily Hydrating Moisturiser one of our favourite mineral sunscreens perfect for sensitive skin. Zinc oxide blocks UV rays while aloe vera leaf juice and glycerin keep your skin hydrated. Just apply to cleansed skin every morning as you would a daily moisturiser. Make sure to reapply every two hours if you plan on being out and about.

Exfoliate Gently and Consistently

Summertime lounging often leads to peeling shoulders and noses. So, as we transition into autumn, it’s important to exfoliate regularly and clear up those dead skin cells for a bright-looking complexion.

We like to take a two step-method for fall exfoliation. Our ILUMA Intense Brightening Exfoliating Powder is an ultra-soft micro-exfoliating blend perfect for all skin types. Pumpkin enzyme gently sheds away damaged and dead skin cells while our protein-peptide complex diminishes the appearance of an uneven skin tone. Just shake a small amount into wet palms and activate by rubbing your hands together until there’s a light foam. Gently massage into your skin and rinse thoroughly.

Although our exfoliating powder is mild enough to use daily, you can try using the powder a few times a week and use our CLEAR CELL Salicylic Clarifying Pads daily. The combination of salicylic acid and glycolic acid in the pads exfoliates and deep cleans clogged pores. Just gently rub one pad over your entire face. Super convenient, it’s perfect for those with a very on-the-go lifestyle.

Introduce a Serum Into Your Routine

While a lightweight cream might have been enough to keep your skin hydrated over summer, biting winds and a drop-in humidity means it’s time to amp up your moisturising game.
While a lightweight cream might have been enough to keep your skin hydrated over summer, biting winds and a drop-in humidity means it’s time to amp up your moisturising game.

To understand why adding a serum to your routine is a fall essential, let’s talk about the differences between serums and moisturisers. Serums are usually a combination of water, oils, speciality ingredients and peptides formulated to penetrate the skin deeply. Moisturisers, on the other hand, are a combination of water, oil, waxes and actives. Unlike serums, moisturizers form a physical barrier to keep water in our skin and have larger molecules. While a lightweight cream can keep our skin hydrated during the humid days of summertime, the extra boost a serum provides can come in handy during fall.

Try ILUMA Intense Lightening Serum, our favourite for sun-damaged skin. A blend of Vitamin C and grape seed extract promote a clarified, fresh-looking complexion.

Treat Yourself to a Mask

We know we’re talking about hydration a lot, but it really is the key glowing skin. To that end, we highly recommend treating yourself with a mask. Not only will you be keeping your skin hydrated, but you’ll also unwind and relax from the stresses of the day. One of our favourites is the I MASK Bimolecular Hydrating Recovery Mask, a moisture-rich sheet mask designed to rescue you of dull, dry skin. A fusion of volcanic waters from Jeju, ginseng root extract, and amino acids give the skin a plump, firm appearance.
